SPECIAL EVENTS

Since WeSET was formed in 2009, we’ve welcomed tens of thousands of visitors to Westmill as part of school trips, group trips and our public on-site tour days. However, from time to time we also hold special events. We invite you to come and experience wind and solar power for yourself.

2023

On Thursday 8th June, we presented an on-site education programme for Key Stage 2 education students. The day consisted of three interactive sessions to promote learning by engaging and challenging children with hands-on, collaborative activities and new experiences. Activities included a workshop titled “Introduction to renewable energy”, an interactive group work activity/game on planning a wind farm/solar park. The day also included a tour of the Wind Farm and a Solar & Biodiversity Discovery walk within the Solar Park.

We held a unique, one-day conference, “Solar Power, Farming and Nature: Maximising The Benefits” on Friday 9th June. The day featured a multitude of speakers, including Dr. Jonathan Scurlock of the National Farmers Union, Chris Hewett of Solar Energy UK, and Dr. Alona Armstrong from the University of Lancaster. Solar power is an increasingly important and essential part of the UK’s energy system. But some people have reservations about its effects on farming and nature. This conference explored these issues and analysed solar projects that are working to increase biodiversity and support farming. It illustrated how solar can be integrated into our countryside.

We planned to hold an Open Day on Saturday 10th June. However, the day was cancelled late on due to weather warnings for the Westmill site. We hope announce another Open Day in the very near future.
